Event 2: Bio-mimicry in the Garden: Drawing Inspiration from Plants for Technology & Design

Event 2Bio-mimicry in the Garden: Drawing Inspiration from Plants for Technology & Design

Hello all!
The botanical garden

This week I was able to attend and amazing exhibition called the botanical gardens which revolved around the interesting relationship between technology, art and nature. The exhibition was called, "Sprouting and branching: Natural models of proliferation and repair. The main focus of the event was comparing the importance of how plants and neuroscience are more alike them we know. I have never made this connection before because when usually thinking about art or nature, my mind does not automatically involve the presents of technology. However, being able to attend this exhibition has opened my eyes yet again to another side of art that I have never thought about.
Comparison of brain to roots

How class helps me understand

This correlates to the things that we have learned through class because,  I am not able to view at in a different like. For example, this week (week 2: math and art) I learned all about how art, math and science intertwined. My brain see how this all makes sense, although now I am able to take the time an subconsciously think about the ways that they make art easier.  Seeing the garden and understand that these beautiful flowers don't just grow, but it also takes a certain amount of science and math to have a finished product of art.

My experience
The comparison of branch to artery
Being present at this event was almost like just seeing art in its nature habitat. The garden is 7 and 1/2 acres filled with flowers and plants from all over the world. I felt extremely relaxed walking through the area, almost like I was able to take in the art in the most organic way possible. During the presentation that Nestor R. Gonzalez MD, MSCR gave, I later understood that planters and neurosurgeons are alike due to the way that the brain arteries are and of how the plants roots are. Dr. Gonzalez does most of his research on plants to further understand how to prevent strokes. After researching on plants, they surgeons came to a conclusion of a surgery called EDAS. I felt like attending this event only help me see how the three, art, science, math all help each other.

The EDSA surgery
I would tell my peers and anyone that is interested in art and the connections it has tot the scientific world to attend this event because you are able to see all the amazing things in person, of how the subjects are Juxtaposition. I was also able to see how much work actually goes into the process of creating such beautiful art. This is the art created by nature and I felt that is was truly beautiful.

Personally touched

Being a Psych major and later wanting to go into neuroscience and radiology, I was really excited to hear the doctor speak about all his research. I also really enjoyed his personal story because it helped me visualize all that he was explaining. He compared the brain to the roots of plants.

Thank you so much!!!!
