Week 3: Robotics and Art

Week 3: Robotics & Art

Technology and Art are one of those things that I have never really go hand and hand. I believe that technology is made to help our society function in a more functional manner yet technology can also make different art forms. I know there are many artist that are constantly using technology to create their own art pieces.

Game of Thrones
For example, in the television series Game of Thrones, there is technology that it used to create an entire world of fictional art. The production and creativity that goes into making one hour long show takes up to three weeks of just filming. Down below is a photograph of how the fictional world for the series comes alive. The majority of the production is green screen, therefore they can create an alternate world. The Game of Thrones Tv series has a 15 million dollar budget so it is able create its worlds. The new media age of creating real life green screen and technology has increased the abilities of the program. This sort of technology requires an insane amount of both science and math in order to really create the magically world in both Game of Thrones and also Jurassic World. The way the systems of the robots are created are similar to the technology that we use on a daily basis. However, at the same time, the way the robots perform differ.

In lecture, Professor Vensa had spoken about the influence of robots with in our society. For example in the movie Jurassic World, the dinosaurs that are seen are made mechanically and are practically robots. The dinosaurs themselves are remote controlled and move by different systems inside them. These robots were created to make a film which is an art form. This is basically robotics in today's society. I believe that this is one of the forms of technology and robotics that are intertwined within our society. With in this specific movie, the context of robots is changed due to the typical idea of robots that society believes. For example, these man made robots are not going around the movie set saying "beep boop beep," which is what society has sculpted as a robotic manner. Although these robots have a greater affect of the movie and the idea of changing the standardized idea of what society believes to be robotics.

Ken Feingold is a popular artist that uses technology to created his work. He is an artist known for new media art. Most of he art work was popular during the contemporary time period. This specific piece of artwork was named "Hell" and it was made in 2013. Feingolds reasoning behind this specific art piece was to really focus on the linguistics of the narration to the meaning of the art. During the narration of the art piece "Hell," the robots are communicating to one another almost the same way as we do as humans.

I personally have never been interested in what robotics had to offer. Gently said, I believe that robotics is a rather boring topic yet I do think that there are some pros in learning about the new wave of technology. It does amaze me that there are people in this world that can create robotics not only for practical use but for the use of art. The relation between art and robotics it not usually spoken about. The art that most individuals interrupt to be art work would be paintings, drawings, or even sculpture but very rarely are robots put on display as artwork.

  1. That first picture is actually hilarious. You brought great examples of using robot concepts in the movie. Game of throne's dragons, Jurassic park's dinosaurs, and such. Your focus on technological advances in film industry was very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
